Socket Preservation (Ridge Preservation)

Preserving Your Jawbone After Tooth Extraction

What Is Socket Preservation?

Socket preservation is a specialized bone grafting procedure performed at the time of tooth extraction to maintain the shape, volume, and strength of the jawbone. By protecting the socket from collapse, this procedure helps preserve your natural contours and creates a strong foundation for future restorations, such as dental implants.

Tooth extraction may be necessary due to pain, infection, bone loss, or tooth fracture. However, the removal of a tooth can lead to rapid bone loss in the surrounding area. The socket (the bone that once supported the tooth) can shrink or collapse, especially if it was already damaged by infection or disease. This loss of bone can impact facial appearance and limit future tooth replacement options.

Without intervention, bone shrinkage can result in:

  • A sunken or aged facial appearance
  • Gum recession and jaw deformities
  • Difficulty placing dental implants, bridges, or dentures later

How the Procedure Works — After the tooth is removed:

  1. Bone Graft Placement – The socket is gently cleaned and filled with a bone graft material (either natural or synthetic).
  2. Membrane or Barrier – The graft is then covered with a gum flap, collagen membrane, or tissue-stimulating proteins to protect the area and encourage healing.
  3. Suturing – The gum tissue is repositioned and sutured to close the site and secure the graft in place.

Over the next few months, your body will regenerate new bone in the socket, preventing the usual shrinkage that occurs after an extraction.

Why is Socket Preservation Important?

  • Prevents facial changes caused by bone loss
  • Supports future dental implants by maintaining bone volume
  • Improves cosmetic outcomes, especially in the front of the mouth
  • Minimizes the need for additional bone grafting procedures later

If you are planning to replace a tooth—especially in the smile zone—socket preservation is often essential to achieving the best aesthetic and functional result.

If you have been advised to have a tooth removed, talk to Dr. Williams and our team about whether socket preservation should be included in your treatment plan. It is a small investment in protecting your long-term oral health and your smile.
