Implant-Supported Overdenture

Secure. Comfortable. Confidence-Restoring.

If you are missing all of your teeth in the upper or lower jaw, traditional dentures may not offer the stability or comfort you need. At Carolina Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Williams offers implant-supported overdentures—a modern, proven solution that restores your ability to chew, speak, and smile with ease.

What Is an Implant-Supported Overdenture?

Unlike standard dentures that rest on the gums and rely on suction or adhesives, implant-supported overdentures are anchored to dental implants placed in the jawbone. These implants provide a solid foundation that keeps your denture securely in place throughout the day. This advanced approach allows for smaller, more comfortable appliances. For example, upper overdentures can be designed in a horseshoe shape—reducing bulk and minimizing gag reflex.

How the Process Works

Your treatment begins with a consultation to determine the number and placement of implants. Typically, two or more implants are placed in the lower jaw and at least four in the upper jaw. Depending on your needs, you may receive one of the following systems:

  1. Locator-based Overdenture – Connectors (called Locators) snap onto the implants to hold the denture securely while still allowing for easy removal and cleaning.
  2. Bar-Supported Overdenture – A rigid bar is attached to the implants, and the denture snaps onto this bar for even greater stability and chewing power.

In many cases, temporary dentures can be placed on the same day as your implant surgery, so you never have to go without teeth. After a brief healing period, your final attachments and custom-fitted overdenture are placed.

Anesthesia Options Available for Surgery

Local Anesthesia

Patients who have undergone fillings or other minor dental procedures may have previous experience with local anesthesia. Local anesthesia is a numbing medication that is injected directly around the area to be treated.

IV Sedation

IV sedation allows patients to enter a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state during a procedure. It is commonly used for more complex surgical treatments or for individuals with significant dental anxiety.

General Anesthesia

Some people are best managed in a hospital or surgery center. This may be due to the complexity of the surgery, health of the patient, or in cases of severe anxiety, emotional immaturity, or developmental delay.
