Bone Grafting for Implants
Bone Health Matters for Dental Implants
When a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone begins to shrink over time due to lack of stimulation. In some cases, there may not be enough bone to place a dental implant safely and securely. Fortunately, bone grafting allows us to restore the bone structure-creating a strong foundation for successful implant placement.
Healing and Bone Changes After Tooth Removal
If the walls of the socket (the bone surrounding a recently removed tooth) are thick and healthy, they often regenerate on their own within 2-3 months. However, in areas where the bone is naturally thinner-such as the front teeth-this healing process is less predictable.
In these cases, Dr. Williams may recommend a bone graft placed at the time of tooth extraction. This simple step helps preserve bone volume and ensures a stable base for future dental implants.
When is Bone Grafting Recommended?
Thin or Inadequate Bone After Tooth Loss
If a tooth was lost many years ago, the jawbone in that area may have thinned significantly. In this situation:
- A bone graft is placed to rebuild the ridge.
- Healing usually takes 4 to 6 months.
- Once the graft has integrated, the implant can be safely placed
Bone Graft at the Same Time as Implant Placement
In some cases, both the graft and implant can be placed during the same procedure:
- This is possible when there’s just enough bone to initially stabilize the implant.
- Bone material is added around the implant to ensure long-term support.
Sinus Grafting for Upper Jaw Implants
If the sinus cavity is too close to the jaw ridge (common in the upper back teeth area), there may not be enough bone height for implants. A sinus lift or sinus grafting procedure creates more vertical bone volume.
- A small window is created on the side of the upper jaw.
- The sinus membrane is gently lifted upward.
- Bone graft material is placed beneath the membrane to add vertical bone height.
- In many cases, the implant can be placed at the same time as the graft.
