Zygomatic Implants

A Solution for Severe Bone Loss in the Upper Jaw

If you have been told you are not a candidate for dental implants due to significant bone loss in your upper jaw, zygomatic implants may be the life-changing solution you’ve been waiting for. These advanced implants are designed specifically for patients who lack sufficient bone volume in the upper jaw—without the need for bone grafting. Zygomatic implants have a unique implant design and are technically more challenging to place than typical implants.  With specialized training and years of focused experience, Dr. Williams offers advanced care for patients with severe bone loss. For over fifteen years his extensive expertise and training has successfully guided his zygomatic implant cases, placement, and happiness of patients.

What Are Zygomatic Implants?

Zygomatic implants are longer than traditional implants and are anchored into the zygomatic bone, also known as the cheekbone. This bone provides excellent support due to its density and structure. Unlike conventional implants that rely on bone in the upper jaw (maxilla), zygomatic implants bypass areas of bone loss entirely.

This approach eliminates the need for sinus lifts or bone grafting and allows patients to receive implants—and often new teeth—in one surgical procedure.

Benefits of Zygomatic Implants

An ideal solution for patients with severe upper jaw bone loss

No bone grafting or sinus augmentation required

Fewer surgeries and shorter overall treatment time

Patients often receive provisional (temporary) teeth the same day as surgery

Enables full-arch restoration in patients who would otherwise be ineligible for implants

The Zygomatic Implant Process

Your treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation at Carolina Oral & Facial Surgery.

With your clinical evaluation, 3D CBCT imaging and planning software are used to assess your anatomy.

Depending on your bone structure, Dr. Williams may recommend a combination of zygomatic and conventional implants, or in some cases, a full-arch supported by zygomatic implants alone.

In most cases, temporary teeth are placed the same day as surgery, allowing you to leave with a confident, functional smile while your implants heal and integrate with the bone.

A Specialized Solution from a Skilled Team

Zygomatic implants are a highly specialized procedure requiring expert planning and surgical precision. At Carolina Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Williams and our team are experienced in full-arch implant solutions for even the most complex cases. If you’ve been told you’re not a candidate for implants, a second opinion may open the door to a solution that restores your smile—and your quality of life.

Anesthesia Options Available for Surgery

Local Anesthesia

Patients who have undergone fillings or other minor dental procedures may have previous experience with local anesthesia. Local anesthesia is a numbing medication that is injected directly around the area to be treated.

IV Sedation

IV sedation allows patients to enter a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state during a procedure. It is commonly used for more complex surgical treatments or for individuals with significant dental anxiety.

General Anesthesia

Some people are best managed in a hospital or surgery center. This may be due to the complexity of the surgery, health of the patient, or in cases of severe anxiety, emotional immaturity, or developmental delay.
