Bone Grafting

At Carolina Oral & Facial Surgery, we prioritize not only saving teeth but also preserving bone.

Tooth loss can affect chewing function and bite alignment, but bone loss may have broader implications for overall health. When a treatment plan involves tooth replacement along with bone preservation, Dr. Williams will discuss dental implant options during your consultation.

When teeth are lost, the jawbone that once supported them begins to shrink or atrophy over time. Without tooth roots to stimulate the bone, it is gradually reabsorbed by the body—often leaving insufficient bone to securely support dental implants.

In the past, patients with significant bone loss were often not candidates for implant treatment. Fortunately, with today’s advanced bone grafting techniques, that has changed.

What is Bone Grafting?

  • Rebuild lost bone in areas where teeth have been missing
  • Prepare the jaw for successful dental implant placement
  • Restore natural contours of the jaw and face
  • Improve both the function and appearance of your smile

By restoring bone where it’s deficient, we can now place implants of proper length and width, increasing their stability and long-term success. Bone grafting can also help improve outcomes in cases of trauma, gum disease, or congenital conditions.

Restoring Your Implant Candidacy

With today’s bone grafting techniques, many patients who were previously told they weren’t candidates for implants now have a second chance. At Carolina Oral & Facial Surgery, we tailor every treatment plan to your unique anatomy and goals—ensuring a clear path toward a healthy, functional, and confident smile.

A Modern Solution with Proven Results

At Carolina Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Williams uses advanced materials and techniques to ensure predictable, safe, and successful outcomes for patients who require bone grafting. Whether you need minor bone support or more extensive reconstruction, our team is here to help you regain confidence, comfort, and lasting oral health. Depending on the location and extent of bone loss, Dr. Williams may recommend one of the following types of bone grafting:

Bone Grafting Services

Socket Preservation (Ridge Preservation)
This type of graft is performed at the time of tooth extraction. A small amount of bone graft material is placed into the socket to preserve its shape and prevent early bone loss. This makes future implant placement easier and more predictable.
Ridge Augmentation
When the jawbone has thinned or collapsed after tooth loss, a ridge augmentation helps rebuild the natural height and width of the jaw. This creates a stable foundation for dental implants and helps restore the natural contours of your smile.
Sinus Lift (Sinus Augmentation)
In the upper jaw, especially near the back molars, the sinus cavity can expand into the area where bone should be. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus membrane and places bone graft material underneath to create enough height for implant placement in this region.
